This will be an exclusive offer to STANSW members until November 30 and we will accept a maximum of 20 participants. A non-refundable deposit of $500 needs to be made before this date. The Spanish Teachers’ Association of NSW is excited to announce a 4-hour workshop with (Easy-to-Read Literature for Spanish Language Learners) author and TPRS specialist Margarita Pérez García.
Margarita Pérez García is a Venezuelan author of Easy-to-Read literature. Margarita holds two master’s degrees in Spanish Language and Spanish and Latin American Literature. She is a teacher of Spanish and French with over 25 years of experience. She has taught languages at all levels, from primary through secondary and higher education, in Venezuela, France, Belgium, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand. Nowadays, she is based in Australia where she teaches languages with comprehension-based methods. Margarita is passionate about supporting students with reading difficulties. She writes fiction and non-fiction that beginners and struggling readers can really read. Margarita writes easy-to-understand stories about Venezuela’s natural beauty and diverse wildlife, natural disasters, and the human environmental impact. She writes fiction based on real stories, animal fiction and fantasy combining conservation themes with myths and legends of indigenous cultures. Margarita is a founding member of Acento Latino Libros™, a collective of independent Latin American authors who write easy readers for Spanish language learners. She authored several books under 100 unique words ideal for level 1 students such as Juliana, Itipurú y el monstruo del océano, Mosca, ¡¡Mosca!!, Mosca en leche and Arroz con cosas. Margarita’s workshop will be relevant to primary and secondary teachers. Registrations for this event have now closed. Date: Friday October 6. Teresa Alonso-Lasheras y Juliete Bates, two very experienced Stage 6 Spanish teachers and HSC markers, will be presenting ideas and tips for teaching these courses, including how to maintain motivation and engagement after the Year 12 students complete their Trials. Whether this is your first time with a Stage 6 class, or you have more experience teaching either or both of these courses, we invite you to participate, as well as to share your ideas and experiences with your colleagues! REGISTRATIONS ARE NOW CLOSED This year once again STANSW is offering a (in person) Practice Speaking Day for your HSC (Beginners, Continuers, Extension courses). Date: Saturday June 17 (Term 2, Week 8). Time: 10am to 3pm - Continuers: 10am – 12pm - Beginners: 1pm- 3pm - Extension: 1pm-2:30pm Place: Wenona School (176 Walker St, North Sydney) Cost: (needs to be paid in advance via the association’s website, NOT on the day) * Continuers $15 per student (covers the price of 2 practices per student) * Beginners $10 per student (covers the price of 2 practices per student) * Extension $5 per student (covers a practice monologue and discussion workshop) Important details for teachers: - For your students to be able to participate we need you to come on the day and conduct oral examinations with students from other schools. (Please note that for the day to run smoothly and on time, we need a ratio of 1 teacher per 8 students). - To participate, please fill in this form before June 2. Places may be limited, so be early! (If you are just willing to help but will not bring any students, please fill in 0 in those sections, and GRACIAS for your generosity!) - The collection of money needs to be made by teachers and payment needs to be made via our website by Wednesday June 7. - Please remember feedback will, unfortunately, not be able to be provided to students on the day. - Students are expected to record their two practice sessions using their own devices. We are excited to open registrations for our first professional learning event of the year! On Saturday March 11, from 10am to 2pm, we are holding a Sharing and Creating of Resources event at the University of NSW (UNSW). The idea is for members from all three teaching stages (primary, secondary and university) to get together, share ideas and create resources. The day will start with short presentations from representatives of each teaching stage to better understand and manage the progressions of students in the language. We will then form teams to share ideas and to create resources and/or programs. The cost of this event is $35, with lunch and refreshments provided on the day. El congreso tendrá lugar el 19 y 20 de noviembre en la Universidad de New South Wales en el campus de Kensington (UNSW) y tendremos la suerte de contar con María Luisa Pérez Cañado (especialista en CLIL) como Keynote Speaker. Durante el Congreso se realizarán gran variedad de actividades como ponencias, mesas redondas,... además de la realización de actividades gastronómicas y culturales que enriquecerán el encuentro. Esta primera edición tendrá un enfoque fundamentalmente práctico y cercano, buscando un intercambio profesional de experiencias. El Instituto Cervantes, así como diferentes universidades y asociaciones de profesores están colaborando con la Consejería para su puesta en marcha ya que el principal objetivo es que sea de gran utilidad para profesores de español de todos los niveles educativos. Los profesores de primaria, secundaria y universidad descubrirán experiencias prácticas para su aplicación en el aula. Además el sábado por la noche los participantes y sus acompañantes podrán asistir a una cena de gala en el restaurante "The Lounge" localizado en la UNSW. Durante la cena, tendremos el placer de disfrutar de un espectáculo de flamenco con Paco Lara como guitarrista. Por ser la primera edición y para favorecer una mayor participación, la organización en esta ocasión financiará el 50% de su precio, además de ofrecer un 20% de descuento en las inscripciones realizadas antes del 31 de agosto.
